Red Pens

Seeing the Minneapolis duo, Red Pens, is like witnessing a demonstration, a demonstration in raw sonic bliss. Howard Hamilton III is a string-bending master who knows how to make feedback work to his advantage. His confident vocal stylings, coupled with drummer Laura Bennett's all or nothing kit pounding, are about as uniquely refreshing as it gets these days. The stage is littered with junk shop amps and guitars Hamilton seems to almost get tangled up in while he and Bennett exchange doses of laser beam eye contact revealing a seemingly deeper connection between the two of them than your average indie rock outfit.

Hamilton and Bennett met in the arena of visual arts and started Red Pens as a way to express their deep love for rock and roll. Howard's old project, The Busy Signals, toured with The Shins and its beat and loop based jams proved to be an underdog favorite in the early 2000's. Laura is well known as a painter, but is best known for her painting on guitar effects boxes. She even has her own signature fuzz pedal, not bad for a drummer.

Their debut album Reasons on Grain Belt Records is a mid-fi bonanza of fuzzy reverb drenched art rock. The wiggly winding guitars, slap back vocals and killer backbeats are sure to give you that silly grin you've been starving for.

Detroit Rebellion

Detroit Rebellion, blues rock duo from Providence, RI at your service--no tricks, no gimmicks, gritty, stripped bare and lo-fi. Named after the Detroit Rebellion of 1967, their debut LP THE MAN brings the less is more approach to a combination of blues and "other" styles - leaning toward "other."

Detroit Rebellion is the creation of Jeff Toste (vocals & guitar) and Mike Lamantia Jr. aka Mikey Lams (drums). In 2009, Toste began performing solo as Detroit Rebellion, which he referred to as "a tribute to old school blues and folk." Once Mikey Lams joined on drums, Toste found Detroit Rebellion "mutating into something else." Something more akin to a swamp-blues-garage-rock sound all their own.

The result is THE MAN LP. Comprised of two critically acclaimed EP's released in 2013, the LP also includes four previously unreleased tracks i.e. The Man, Trash Talk, Echo Chamber and The Spy. The twelve songs were initially recorded together, so the band opted for an LP release as opposed to another EP. Toste said about the LP, "For those unfamiliar with the limited release EP's, we wanted to present the listener with the whole enchilada."

The Franks

The Franks

tell the franks punk rock died the day it was defined and they'll tell you to piss off. remind them that sid vicious died almost a decade before they were conceived and they'll laugh in your face. talk about detroit or london and they'll interrupt you with a smirk so sardonic you'll crawl back to whatever old folks' home you came from with your bigot tail tucked so far between your legs you won't walk right for days.

the franks emerged on the l.a. scene in 2008 not long after frontman jean don't - having spent 21 years throwing fits and raising hell inside his own head - finally got sick of thinking and breathing punk and recruited a team to live it out loud: drummer mimi malone and bassist ron ray gunn. they were to bring it back; whatever it was that got lost when the clash threw in the towel leaving rock empty of anything but eye-makeup and radio promoters.

so, talk to the franks about how punk rock was at least a little resurrected when britney spears shaved her head and how it died all over again at the sight of her extensions, tell them that living in l.a. looks shitty on a punk's résumé, and tell them that they'll be fighting a venomous enemy taking on a world of commercial artistry...

frankly my dears, they won't give a f*ck.

the franks have shared the stage with contemporaries such as wavves, the soft pack, and best coast. duh is their second ep.

Blac Rabbit
How Far Music
Blac Rabbit

Born and raised in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn, identical twin brothers Amiri and Rahiem Taylor do not make the type of music that their borough of origin is usually associated with. Growing up in the mecca of hip hop culture, the Taylor brothers had more exposure in their house to pop, funk and soul music from the 60's, 70's and 80's. In high school they taught themselves how to play guitar and write songs based off of the Beatles. After high school they formed Blac Rabbit, bringing in former metal and church drummer Patrick Jones, followed by resident shredder Josh Lugo on bass (and sometimes guitar) to play their original psychedelic rock tunes. Tired of working boring grocery store jobs, Amiri and Rah started performing Beatles covers on the NYC subway, earning some pocket change, slowly building a reputation around the city while also performing their original material in New York's best venues for up and coming acts. On December 23rd, 2017, the band released their debut self-titled EP, which was also self recorded and self mixed. On January 26th, 2018, Rah and Amiri were filmed performing Beatles songs on the train by New York Nico, the "Unofficial talent scout of New York City," who posted the video to his 120K+ followers on Instagram. One of the videos went viral generating over 25M streams, leading to numerous TV and Radio appearances, including The Ellen Degeneres Show. The band also recorded a cover of “Michelle” by the The Beatles for a Gucci ad campaign featuring Harry Styles. Meanwhile Blac Rabbit’s fan base has increased significantly while they have been touring globally and recording their debut full length album, set for release early 2019.

Into cool electro instrumentals? You should like Interest Relief. I'm Brad, the dude behind this often weird electro-rock music.. I write and record all the songs at home with limited equipment, training, time, and creativity. But I have a lot of fun doing it. My wife and kids keep me well-stocked in inspiration and exhaustion, and I try to make music that appeals to all of us on some level.

Note to BForB clients: If you license the song "Life Is Good" all the fees go to benefit St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. Also check out my rock/punk band, The Combine Chiefs, for great soundtracks to any sport or insane activity.
